I also agree that the possibility of survival can make people deal with such horrors, if they see the light at the end of the tunnel. But the sad part is that most didn't ever get to the light at the end of the tunnel, they died at the hands of their murderers.

Hope is a powerful tool in survival, without it people just give up completely. Hope helped those who did survive the Holocaust and other genocidal actions.

Last night I watched a good program on CNN about the history and symbolism of the noose in the South and the rest of the country. It is a hard program to watch (at times very graphic), but it needs to be seen. African-Americans and even Jews were lynched by mobs, and the noose is still being used as a symbol of hate today, like the swastika and other hate images.

to see video and read articles on this, go to:

http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/siu/the.noose/

May also catched reruns of program on CNN, it's called "The Noose: An American Nightmare".

It seems that it would have been in America's best interest not to have awarded this medal to the Dalai Lama and thus piss off the PRC government, considering our economy heavily relies on Chinese imports. It's interesting that a Republican president would strain relations with China and thus jeopardize our economy when Republicans generally profess that the most important thing in the world is a strong economy. Why do this on one hand, and on the other claim it's in our best interest to maintain good relations with Turkey so we can continue to kill innocent Iraqis and sow more seeds for a civil war or a genocide?

I suppose we must give him and Congress credit for deciding to make some sort of symbolic gesture of support for Tibet. But it could be a publicity stunt. The Republicans are in desperate need of public support so they can win in 2008. Of course, it could also be — and is probably more likely — that Bush simply doesn't know what he's doing.

I have two hypotheses, and I think Sherrie covered one.

The victims feel powerless against the government sanctioning and performing the genocide, and against the fellow citizens who support the government and repeat its rhetoric. They may feel that they're alone. Hardly anyone is coming to their rescue. They feel resistance is futile, basically.

They may also fear the possibility of being killed if they don't comply, and hope for the possibility they'll be rewarded if they do. It is always remotely possible, after all, to survive a genocide.

So, in short, I think it's both helplessness and the hope of possibly surviving.

I personally as a writer, think freedom of speech and press is very important. Though, I believe the media also needs to give us honest news coverage, on domestic and global issues. Not one sided propaganda. This country should never turn into Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia.

Hate speech and hate groups should never be glorifed or taken lightly. These groups and individuals have an agenda to harm other groups of people, they use the media (internet, publishers, newpapers and television) for the spread of their hate. They have the right to be seen and heard, but not glorified. And, I also believe, if they take it too far (by promoting hate killings and crimes) they should be watched and stopped by law enforcement. The right to freedom of speech they have, the right to murder or harm someone they do not have.

Some I would say go into a denial mode psychologically, where they can't think that it is really happening, because it is too terrible and horrible to acknowledge without losen it completely mentally. This would be both the victims and observers, who could feel this way.

Others (the observers) do not care at all, it isn't their problem. Either from the mind set "It's not me. Why should I care?" or "Those people are not human beings like myself, they're the "other" animal."

Victims do try fighting but are over powered and under armed. Their resistence stop almost before it starts. Ten people verses one hundred type fight (genocide is a unfair fight.)

I think there is something behind it, but to pin down what is, is very hard. The Game goes on. We'll know maybe a few months or years from now, what is behind this. But for now America and the world will be in the dark, its The Game.

Personally I beleive if this had been done for the right reasons, it was a good thing, a awesome thing. Genocide, past or present, should be stopped, recognized, and studied, because we can learn from this, maybe how to stop it before it starts. But I think this is a empty political ploy for something, but not to remember the victims of the Armenian genocide. This makes me sick at my stomach that these dead are being use for power gain of some sort, it is distasteful.
