Another Offering

Filed under: Uncategorized — peaceclass @ 12:22 pm

As you may know, this blog originated as an opportunity for students in a class “The Psychology of Peace” to post comments on the materials and points of view taught in the class.  The next step in the evolution of this blog was for students in another class, “The Psychology of Genocide” to post comments concerning the material in that class.  These classes were both offered as special psychology classes at Klamath Community College here in Klamath Falls.  The next “evolutionary” step will be to offer a sociology class on the topic of Death and Dying.  This may be offered in the fall, if not, the next possibility is in the winter of 2009,

Peace.  Knowledge and Insguhtful reflection can guide and discipline intuition on our lives.

Thoughts on Peace and Genocide

Filed under: Uncategorized — peaceclass @ 3:31 pm

As a reminder, there is not a current class that is using this blog.  However, there is still reason to discuss current events and issues in the world as they relate to the topics at hand.  There are still conflicts occurring in the world which may set the stage for later genocidal potential and actions.

Iraq is an example of an old state creating within itself a new state.  The sectarian divisions between Sunni, Shi’a and and Kurdish populations may well provoke power struggles and blame frames. The influence of Neighboring Iranian Shite influence may well flame the flames of retribution for past injustices imposed on the Shi’s by the Bathist/Sunni government. The current presence of foreign soldiers on sacred soil will do little to deter this possibility.

The many situations in Africa give cause for concern.  Poverty, starvation, politicalpower conflict and struggle pit one tribal/ethnic group against one another.  The West offers platitudes and placates the groups in power.

The situation in Myanmar continues to concern as a government considers outside assistance a danger after a natural disaster that has left nearly 100,000 dead. The toll will continue to survive.  It is possible that the lack of compassion for those that suffers is an exclusion of aid to those that oppose the current governments policies. This cannot be verified since this is such a closed nation-state.

So much to learn! So much to consider!

Peace is the Way–Compassion is the Concourse–Truth is the Thoroughfare.

Status of blog

It seems as if the next Special Class in Psychology at Klamath Community College will be the Psychology of Genocide (PSY 299). The class on Death and Dying will be under another classification of at KCC. I am still not sure when that will be. Once again the blog will allow students to post comments to one another about the content of the class. The next class on Genocide is set for Fall of 2008.

The text will be Will Genocide Ever End? (Ritter, Ross, Smith; Paragon House 2002)
